--One week after first Astartes contact with Magsnaga's Orks--
Pyrus checked over the duty rosters meticulously. In the wake of the previous week's Ork attack, it turned out that many of his fallen brothers were merely wounded, and not dead. A few had earned the Emperor's Grace, but only a few. The rest still had their duty to Mankind. (Note: I don't consider my casualties to be 'wounded but not dead' because of any sort of slight to my opponents, but simply because after a handful of games realistically I'd have burned through more Marines than would have likely been dispatched, and they're not fast to replace. Narratively, dead space marines means I'm out of the campaign after a few battles even if I win.)
In the aftermath of the battle, the defense network around the shrine had been set up, though it was primarily manned by Planetary Defense Forces with a few of his Marines stationed as advisers and overseers. The bulk of his forces were running patrols beyond the defensive perimeter, though he kept a core force in reserve for his upcoming mission. He'd received new orders - take a heavy scouting force into the ruins and investigate some very odd power fluctuations, as well as catalog any runes engraved on the ancient stone of the shrine. The power fluctuations began shortly after his battle with the Eldar scum, and it was believed that perhaps some of their Xenos technology may have survived in the wreckage. Based on his former service with the Deathwatch, and his closer association with Xenos technology than most, his particular skills would be needed.
He began drawing up plans for the operation, with a healthy dose of paranoia... Delteron IV had already thrown two Xenos surprises at him in as many months, and he wasn't about to take anything for granted when trying to pick apart the ruined shrine in search of the odd power signature.
